Top Ten Search Hacks for dummies
Millions of people across the world use Google. Google has become the “go-to” search engine. Whenever people need to search something, their immediate course of action is to “google” it. It has become an integral part of their lives. Everyone uses Google, however, only some know how to use it correctly. Following is a list of cool search hacks you can use to find exactly what you are looking for.
1. Timer/ Stopwatch
One of Google’s many features is the ability to set a timer or use a stopwatch. For those moments when you quickly need to time something, this is the perfect solution. No need to click around until you find a timer. Simply type “timer” google search, choose timer or stopwatch, set a time, and you are set! It is an extremely useful tool to save time while you time something.
2. Calculator/ Convertor
Google calculator and converter is a time saving tool. The calculator is equipped with all the basic features of a calculator including trigonometry functions, logarithms, exponents, pi, etc. It also includes degrees and radiant modes. Sounds like a basic scientific calculator, however there are some features that make this calculator unique. You can type in words such as “pi to 3 decimal places” and google the answer will at the top. There are numerous ways to use the search bar to get your answers. Type in the question and google will calculate it for you. Furthermore, you can also use the google converter to get a conversion on the fly! There are several types of conversions such currency from one country to another, inches to centimeters, Celsius to Fahrenheit, and several more. Simply type in words such as “5 inches to centimeters” or “5 dollars to euros” and the answers will show up above the search results.
3. Allintext, allintitle, allinurl
These three are search hacks all users must know. These can help refine searches and make your searching experience much easier. These are three of the many search hacks you can use to specify your searches.
Allintext – This search tool can be used to find websites containing your search words in the body of the webpage. To use these, type in “allinurl:(searchword)” without any spaces after the colon.
- Example: If you type in allintext:search hacks, the search results will return webpages with “search hacks” in the body of the webpage.
Allintitle – This search tool can be used to find websites containing your search words in the title. To use these, type in “allintext:(searchword)” without any spaces after the colon.
- Example: If you type in allintext:search hacks, the search results will return webpages with “search hacks” in the title.
Allinurl – This search tool can be used to find websites containing your search words in the URL. To use these, type in “allinurl:(searchword)” without any spaces after the colon.
- Example: If you type in allinurl:search hacks, the search results will return webpages with “search hacks” in the website url.
4. Exclude words
This is a very simple hack that many can use to remove all the unnecessary search results that are generally more popular than what you are intending to find. A person may be searching for information on apple (the fruit), however, the search results are all about Apple (the technology company). This search tool can help weed out the more popular search results to find the specific results you are looking for. To use this hack, type in “apple – technology”. This weeds out some of the results containing the words apple and technology together and gives you results relevant to the fruit.
5. File types
This search hack is for those who are looking for specific file type. When searching for media types such as books or mp3 files, you can use this search feature to seek out the exact file type you are looking for. For books, one may want to search “(book name):pdf” without any spaces after the colon. The results for this search will only be PDF files. Same thing can be done search for other file types such as mp3, mp4, gif, jpg, etc.
6. Search using images
This search hack is fairly popular among the users. Google has given users the ability to search for information using pictures. This search tool is useful for purposes such as finding a source to a picture, finding related images, and finding higher quality of an image. To use the reverse image search, simply drag an image file from your computer into the search bar. The image will be uploaded and then searched.
7. OR and AROUND
These are advanced search functions that can be used to get extremely accurate search results. Here is how they work:
OR – This search feature can be used to find any of the search terms typed in the search bar. The search results do not include all the search terms; they look at each word separated by a capital OR as a separate search term.
- Example: NBA Champions 2001 OR 2009. The search results will include NBA champions from both 2001 and 2009 and give information about them.
AROUND – This search feature can be used to find webpages with two words in a given proximity. To use this, type in “(search term 1)(word proximity) (search term 2)”.
- Example: Apple(5) iPhone. The search results will include websites that mention both Apple and iPhone exactly five words apart.
This search function is used to define a word. You can simply type in “define:(word)” without and spaces after the colon to define the word.
This function is used to translate words from one language to another. You can type in a word in English and translate to other languages. It also works the other way around; you can type in a word in Arabic and translate it to English. The translate feature also works with sentences and phrases. To use this feature, type in your search terms and enter the language you want the terms to be translated to. Example: Hello in French. The translation will appear on top of the search results.
10. Check Scores
For all the sports fans, this feature can be used to check live scores of any games. Note that this feature is meant to be used when the game is taking place at the moment. Scores are updated frequently as the games go on. To use this feature, type in names of both teams (Lakers vs Celtics) in the search bar. The current scores and game progress will be displayed on top of the search results.
